Stittsville

Stittsville is one of the most charming Ottawa neighbourhoods I work in and prides itself on maintaining its small and friendly village feel. Stittsville is made up of several distinct neighbourhoods: Amberwood, Jackson Trails, Poole Creek Village, Rathwell Landing, Forest Creek, Timbermere, Potter’s Key, Fairwinds, Deer Run, Crossing Bridge, Bryanton Gate, Edenwylde, and Forest Run, to name a few.

Stittsville is known for its caring community of local residents and very active service clubs. Whether they’re young or old, retired or working, or live as larger families, Stittsville is an Ottawa neighbourhood that takes pride in its sense of togetherness.

With a higher-than-average household income, Stittsville offers a lifestyle that is second-to-none for single professionals, families, and seniors alike.

The homes within Stittsville are predominantly freehold detached single family homes and townhomes, but there are several newer apartment-style buildings that target seniors, as well as the very senior-focussed bungalow condo community of Amberwood in this Ottawa neighbourhood.

The Locals

Young professional, growing family, or active retiree? Stittsville has a home that’s right for you. Featuring condos, contemporary townhomes, bungalows, and forever homes, there are plenty of homes to choose from.

You’ll never have to leave the community if you outgrow your home or need to downsize. It’s also one of the few areas that have a healthy mix of older homes and new construction.

The Best Parts

Local residents of this Ottawa neighbourhood can find everything they could ever need in Stittsville. With a huge selection of stores and grocery chains, well-known restaurants, and large retailers, everything is at your fingertips.

While we all enjoy the convenience of large-scale suburban amenities, Stittsville has a number of smaller, thriving local businesses too, and many act as important community meeting spots.

There is also an enormous amount of public green space, parks, The Trans Canada Trail, a dog park and a 9-hole golf course.

Stittsville Then

Stittsville takes its name from Jackson Stitt, the Village’s first postmaster. Originally, Stittsville was nothing more than a small collection of homes and shops located at what is now the intersection of Carp Road and Hazeldean Road. Following the Great Fire of Carleton County in 1870, however, almost everything was destroyed. When the Village was rebuilt, it was re-established two kilometres south around the new railway line.

By 1910, Stittsville was a busy rail centre with as many as 16 trains going through every day, and many of the local residents worked for the railway. Stittsville’s growth was slow and steady, but when the introduction of Highway 417 in the ‘70s allowed for easy access to downtown Ottawa, the town’s growth picked up real momentum.

Stittsville Now

Today, Stittsville is a thriving community on the western edge of Ottawa, and the population now comprises over 41,000 residents. Stittsville is home to all kinds of families, seniors and retirees, beautiful natural areas, and a wide variety of local shops and businesses. Stittsville is known as a caring community that works hard to maintain that “village” feel. There are a number of very vibrant and active service clubs available to local residents.

There are also many local events such as Arts in the Park and Light Up the Night that are enjoyed by Stittsville residents and an abundance of recreational opportunities to explore, such as the CARDELREC Recreation Centre, the Trans Canada Trail, the Goulbourn Lawn Bowling Club, and Amberwood Golf Course. Stittsville is an Ottawa neighbourhood that truly has something for everyone.

As you might expect with any suburb, Stittsville is dominated by road traffic, although OC Transpo does provide a number of buses through the various neighbourhoods as well as a connection to the O-Train Confederation Line at Tunney’s Pasture. Although the Trans Canada Trail runs directly through Stittsville, it’s used mostly for recreation rather than as a means of travel.
